Rock-e-hill Rat Terriers

Available Puppies

We have  some really nice standard Rat Terriers at Rock-e-hill. We have had numerous Champions, Grand Champions and several that have been high on the UKC Top Ten  list. We raise and show them. Puppies are raised in the house with a lot of  affection and imprinting.

Adults get a lot of hunting experience on our 10 acre ranch, we also raise Arabian  horses.

My first Rat......

I remember going to a friend’s house and seeing this little dog, I didn’t know what she was but, I wanted one just like her. Her name was Mini Moocher and turned out to my beloved Pennie’s mom.

That was the beginning of a love affair that has lasted!!

My take of the Rat Terrier

The Rat Terrier is a small breed of dog; they range in size from 7 to 30 lbs. give or take a couple of pounds one way or the other.  These dogs adapt very well with anything you put them into.  They make great house dogs, outside dogs; they are great with kids and other animals so long as they are exposed at a young age.  The rat is a very solid, stout, tuff little dog that can take a kick from a horse and shake it off.  They are very intelligent normally very easily house trained.  They are hunting dogs of sorts, they hunt rodent, rats, mice, gophers, possums, raccoons, and I even know a man that uses them too hunt wild boar!!!  Yes they are tuff!!  They love hanging out on the couch in front of the TV or under the covers sleeping in.  Yet when it’s time too go outside and play or hunt, they will go all day long!!!   Rats are very loyal dogs, they don’t bother livestock on a whole, I have seen only 3 or 4 exceptions to that rule.   The only health problems I am aware of are in the smaller rats they can have luxating patellas.  Normally they are not barkers, they will if someone comes up too the house or car but normally they quite down when told too.  I have not seen a rat that stands there and barks just to be barking, like some other breeds.  They can be diggers, it depends on the individual.  I have some dogs that will dig trenches you could put in an irrigation system down with and then I have seen dogs that never dig and I have seen everything in between!!  When I had my Avery with parakeets and cockatiel I would bring my dog Pennie in with me, she would catch mice galore yet if a bird fell to the floor she would not even look at it.
